During COVID-19 I am providing psychotherapy by videoconference only
Welcome to my psychotherapy practice website.
I provide therapy and neurofeedback for adults and adolescents in my downtown Santa Rosa office, or by videoconference online.
Psychotherapy is an adventure of self-discovery and healing that will both challenge and reward you. It reflects great courage just to pursue it, and it takes a certain independence of thought and heart to overcome the shame and cultural programming that would tell us that we aren't supposed to struggle or hurt, or ever need or ask for help.
I hope this site will answer any questions you may have about me and my work. If there’s some information you are looking for that you don’t find here, please don’t hesitate to call or email me by using the form below.
I am a psychotherapist in private practice since 2008. My approach is both deep and pragmatic, as well as holistic. I integrate many different therapeutic approaches and styles--from yogic philosophy to Freud to interpersonal neurobiology and beyond: body, mind, and spirit.
My focus is work with individuals age 15 and up. Late adolescence, early adulthood, midlife, folks in recovery, and others seeking greater meaning, health, performance, and satisfaction.
In addition to therapy, I am an expert in neurofeedback, a more effective alternative to medication for common issues of brain regulation such as depression, anxiety, and emotional reactivity.
"Of all the talk therapists I've been to, I recall you being the most effective. Despite the brief interval I was your patient, you seemed to get to the heart of the matter right away, and could point out the things I wasn't paying attention to."
"I can highly recommend Silvia Costales for neurofeedback work. I've done tons of therapy and after one course of neurofeedback treatment my baseline anxiety was calmed and I began sleeping deeply through the night. Neurofeedback has been transformative, as if I had a meditation practice for 30 years. It was easily done without any conscious effort on my part. My brain is changed and I'm extremely grateful. I researched the technique and read the book Symphony of the Brain prior to trying the procedure. I have referred friends and my psychotherapy clients to her and they've all been pleased with the results. Silvia is a highly intelligent, inquisitive, non-judgmental, ethical, warm, and extremely competent practitioner who keeps up on all the latest developments."
"I went to see Silvia for neurofeedback and found the treatment super calming for my hyper vigilance and anxiety. As a person with PTSD I had been frustrated with my inability to rid myself of several symptoms such as my startle reflex and frustration tolerance despite using other treatment modalities. This worked and the effects have lasted several years now.
Silvia is brilliant and stays on top of the research and has state of the art equipment. Silvia is warm and compassionate and I trusted her ability to navigate the science of neurofeedback to treat me appropriately and efficiently.
Recently I took my daughter to Silvia because of an illness that is causing inflammation in the brain and Silvia was able to do a comprehensive analysis of her brain and recommend treatment options for my daughter to pursue at college.
Neurofeedback was an investment in my brain health and well being. I would say that it provided me with a sense of calm (that has stuck for several years) that years of regular talk therapy was unable to provide."
“Neurofeedback is a simple, non-invasive approach for increasing affect tolerance, lifting depressive mood states, and calming states of fear from the “bottom up,” by changing brain wave patterns associated with these symptoms. The best neurofeedback treatment requires both technical competence and precision along with clinical skill and empathic attunement.
Silvia Costales not only offers a warm, validating therapeutic presence but also a very organized, precise approach to neurofeedback responsive to her client’s symptoms week to week. Well-trained in a wide variety of protocols for different kinds of symptoms, Silvia helps clients to not only find relief but also increase their ability to make use of psychotherapy.”
